Chapter Eleven

We had no choice but to follow obediently as we were led across the snowy compound from one hut to another. I noted covertly, into which of the huts the women had taken Scottie. There was nothing we could do right now without losing our shelter for the night, but come the morning I intended to fight tooth and nail to get Scottie back. Then again, maybe leaving him behind would be the best thing for the child. We had no idea what the future held for us outside of the compound. Our survival so far had been more luck than judgement. There were no guarantees Dax and I would make it through another day, let alone be able to protect Scottie.

Plus, the kid had been quite happy to go with the women. It was only natural he missed his mother and older brothers. If there were other kids in the compound, maybe he would better off if we let him stay. He might even want us to leave him behind where he’d be safe.

“He belongs with us,” Dax said quietly, slipping his hand into mine as we walked.

I looked at him in surprise, thinking a half hour ago he hadn’t wanted to draw attention to our sexuality. But then, I guess there was nothing left to hide after the revelation of the dainty underwear he wore. Behind us, one of the men snorted, but I would take derision over eviction any day. I squeezed Dax’s hand and pulled him closer to me. He flashed me a weak smile which didn’t reach his eyes, telling me he was still worried.

“You can sleep in here,” the group leader said, opening a door to a sterile room containing nothing but twin beds. “It’s basic but it’s better than being outside. There’s a bathroom through there. Water will be cold, so it’s up to you whether you shower or not. I’ll have someone bring you clean clothes.” He cast Dax a scathing look. “Sorry, but we’re fresh out of lace panties. You’ll have to make do with regular men’s stuff. Now, don’t leave this room without an escort. We don’t want to have to shoot you. Any questions?”

“Yeah,” I said, “I’ve got plenty. What’s your name for a start? How many of you are there here? How did you know about the cylinders? Why…”

“Okay, one at a time.” The guy raised his hands in a defensive gesture. “My name is Deacon Rowe. I apologise for not introducing myself sooner, but we’re not used to visitors. The social niceties have kind of fallen by the wayside.” He leaned against the wall and folded his arms across his chest, a man totally at ease with both his command and surroundings. “In answer to your second question, there are seventy-six people currently living in the compound. Contrary to popular belief, we are not a cult and everybody is here of their own free will. As to how we know about the machines – we are not as cut off from civilization as it has been claimed in the press.
